Imus Ignorance = Nike Advertising Campaign?

By , About.com GuideApril 18, 2007

It's true! Nike is building an ad campaign out of the Imus controversy. The goal of the ad? According to AdAge the purpose is to spark continued conversation regarding race in America.

The full-page ad ran in the April 15th edition of The New York Times followed by banner ads on several websites. Effective or not effective in your opinion?

Instead of using this subject and flipping it to their advantage, why not develop a new gimmick? This subject(and other prejudices), which are definitely worthy of our attention, is in almost every arena of radio, tv, and our lives and most of us have strong opinions about it. Today I heard that Russell Simmons believes we should be taking a look at lyrics in some songs. As he is a part of the Hip-Hop world, he may have something there. Some lyrics and videos portray women in a less than lovely light so to speak. And some words that my generation fought in the 1960’s have been in question as well. But that’s another discussion. Why not try a campaign that’s unique and leave this to the media? (We just wanna buy shoes!) Just a thought. Thanks for asking for our opinions.
