Laura, you’ve provided a great explanation of the difference between marketing and advertising. The confusion I often faced throughout my career has been explaining to people the difference between sales and marketing. As a marketer, the two seem lightyears apart to me, but non-marketing people seem to often think the two disciplines are one and the same.

I have always used the 4 P’s to define the marketing pie. Product, Price, Place(ment) and Promotion. Very simplified, but effective. Advertising would fall under the Promotion portion.

It is not a question if we are going to market or not market our business or service because no business can avoid marketing, the only question is; are we going to do it good or bad.
I always tell my students that:
Marketing is the identification of a target market and using the appropriate blend of the marketing mix, satisfying the needs and wants of the target.

The four P’s (product, price, place, and promotion) are what marketing is all about. Laura you offer good tips and helpful information, and like you say it is always important to remember the needs of the consumer.

I guess it is pretty clear to me the differences between sales and marketing. Without a clear marketing plan, you will make no sales. How will people find your products and services? where to you tell your story? A billboard (yuck), online (yes), amongst your neighboring business (yes), on flyers (not the best)…..and be sure to plan ahead! So what’s everyone promoting for the holidays? :-) good article, good information to get out there!
