Are you looking for new customers? You may be missing a goldmine under your nose. Yes, I'm talking about Twitter again. Recently Nielsen released a report that stated Twitter has grown 1,382% from February 2008 to February 2009, that's 7 million users.

Now, with all of that being said there is a right and a wrong way to use Twitter to find potential customers and clients. That's why I want to take some time and not only share with you how to use Twitter to find them, but to also give you the information that you need when it comes to following the etiquette of Twitter.

If you are currently not using Twitter to market, I think by understanding how to use Twitter to find prospects will change your mind. It's a new era and it's time to adopt some of the new ways of marketing and that includes social media marketing.

I'm not only here to share with you how to use Twitter to market your business, but I also enjoy hearing the success stories of how people are using this new medium to promote and grow their business. Do you have a success story? If so, please share it in the comment section. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

I’m planning on taping my Twitter login information to my pet rock which was given to me a few decades ago as a gift. I’m pretty sure Twitter should be almost as valuable, so it should be safe stored up there in the attic.

JT, just like any marketing vehicle whether Twitter would work for you really depends on your business and customer profile, but I’m pretty sure it will always represent a certain value that is somewhat more substantial than a pet rock.

I’m sure many people also thought Google was like their pet rock. :)

P.S. Thank you for the correction, I appreciate it :)

LOL! Mostly just kidding with you on the Twitter comment. For some things it’s actually pretty useful, such as some of the stock traders I’ve followed that are using it to broadcast their analysis of the market in semi-real-time.

On the other hand, the other 95% talking about the cheeseburger they just got or the guy who was twittering on his house being burglarized… ah… not such much.

Social marketing is extremely effective — when executed correctly. The problem right now is, there are folks that call themselves “social media marketing experts” simply because they’ve managed to acquire a couple thousand followers on Twitter or the others. That means absolutely nothing if those people aren’t recalling the brand.

The core function of social media marketing for a business is just that — to be social. Not to post offers and gimmicks. It’s all about networking and bringing the big corporate conglomerate down to earth so the average Joe can relate.

From what I’ve seen in the Small Business Community, I have to agree that there are many so called Social Media Experts yet all they’ve accomplished is a following.

Social Media is like a meet and greet. It’s about building a relationship that will “hopefully” lead to a sale. I encourage all small business owners to track direct and indirect results.

More often not you get indirect results, such as more website traffic.

Word of Advice – Don’t confuse running a promotion with running a business. If you’re not getting sales, you’re just promoting yourself. That’s okay… if you like to be talked about and are for running awareness campaigns.

Just be aware that you can be well known, with lots of followers, and broke none-the-less.

What matters first and foremost is profits. Dollars in bank accounts.
