Get Your Business Listed on the First Page on Google

Thursday June 4, 2009
Sound too good to be true? I promise that if you spend just a few moments with me today I will show you a legit way to get listed in Google and it's not a scam, nor will I charge you thousands of dollars for the answer. Ready?

We hear a lot about search engine marketing and how potential customers often go online to find the products and services they are looking for. The problem that most businesses run into is that they are not yet listed in the search engines, or if they are they are so far down in the search engine results that those seeking for their products or services don't find them. I'm going to show you how to change that by using the feature of Google Local Maps.

You've probably seen these results in your own search queries. They are listed on the front page in the middle of the page right next to the Google map. The listing includes the business name, address and telephone and a link that goes directly to the businesses website.

I often look at Google Local as a hidden treasure, most do not know how to get listed there, well that's not the case anymore - there is no excuse. I'm going to show you how you can get listed on the front page of the search engine results of Google when potential customers search for your product or service within your local region. It's really not difficult to get listed using the Google Local feature and you can do it in just five steps.

Getting listed on Google Maps (or Local Business) is a no brainer and is totally free. Like Laura I use it for all my business products and services and the results frequently appear in less than an hour.

There is another upside. By appearing on Google Maps in the UK (and presumably the US and elsewhere) you also appear on some Satnav systems. This is great for hotels, garages, and things that people seek whilst on the move ……..but also works for consultants like myself.

You owe it to yourself to appear on these maps as it costs nothing but has the potential to drive a lot of business your way.

Google Maps seems a little weird with their results sometimes. Why is it that a website that is not related at all to the category would get a higher listing than one that is completely relevant?

Lancaster, a lot of where a business ranks has to do with what “categories” a business selects, this could be the reason you are seeing results like that.

Laura,
Thanks for this great tip. I just registered with Google Local and it was a very easy process. And just moments later, my business already showed up in the search results!

Thanks for the reminder. Seems like small gems like “local” listings often fall to the wayside as we chase the more difficult tasks. But when you set out the steps as simply and clearly as you did here, that makes it all the more difficult to justify putting it off for another day. Great job on this – and all your other tips.

Question is there a way to stay on the front page of the local business maps, I have been rotated out of third position…. and now will only be found on page 3 or 4. The first two in my search are always the same.
