When it comes to social media marketing we are always faced with changes. It's a new area of marketing and it's continuing to evolve. That's why I often remind people that there are no social media experts. The last two weeks have been especially busy for both Facebook and LinkedIn. I'm going to do something that I never do which is combine two blog post into one, because I feel both of the changes made to Facebook and LinkedIn are equally important.
Facebook Open Graph Protocol
On April 21st Facebook made an announcement regarding their new Open Graph protocol and how it would affect those of us that use Facebook. These changes wouldn't just affect us as individual users, but they would also open new doors to marketers. You may recall the day these changes were made - it's when we saw our "Fan" button migrate into a "Like" button. It seemed like a simple change, but were we prepared for everything else they rolled out on that day? It's important as a marketer that you understand the Open Graph protocol not only for utilization but to protect your own privacy. I tried to draft up a recap of the Open Graph protocol and the features it brings to the table in my article entitled Making Marketing Sense Out of Facebook Open Graph Protocol. This is one article you won't want to miss if you have any interest in social marketing for your business.
LinkedIn Announces New "Follow" Company Feature
If those changes were not enough in the social media marketing realm last week LinkedIn introduced the ability to follow companies. I personally love this new feature and I think it really opens up the door for LinkedIn to step up and be a more vibrant social media marketing platform. Learn why it's important to understand the new company follow feature in LinkedIn. Is your company ready to be followed on LinkedIn?
Your turn: What do you think of these changes and will they help you in marketing more efficiently?

Laura, I added the Facebook “Like” button to one of the main landing pages on my website this week. Within 24 hours, the page moved up several pages in Google. It seems that this could be very interesting for marketers seeking to improve their page rank.
Great blog – its really challenging running a business and trying to keep up to date with all the changes in social media and this really helps. I’m going to add the Like button asap. Thank you.
Hey Laura – I think both changes (Facebook and LinkedIn) are great…as both continue to evolve I think the biggest error would be resistant to these changes. I for one am 7 “Likes” away from my Facebook Fan Page and am on my way now to LinkedIn to start “Following” some of my favourite companies. Great post my dear. Andy
Really I will try to implement few ideas proposed in your site for my software service & software development business.
Thanks Dear…
