Branding From the Inside Out

By , About.com Guide   June 29, 2010

Follow me on:

In a discussion with a colleague we began to talk about the importance of the way a company treats their employees and how it affects how they then treat the company's clients. He has seen the truth of this principle in the company that he works for and today that company is experiencing ultimate success.

This conversation reminded me of an article I wrote during an epiphany moment called Internal Branding. Truth is marketing starts from the inside out. It' important to realize that if you try to start on the outside first your endeavor will fail.  Branding is not only skin deep it  starts with your employees. If they are not reflecting your brand this could be diminishing your marketing efforts.  It's important to get your employees involved and behind your brand.

Your turn: What are you doing to brand from the inside out?

This article is right on target. The last two companies I’ve worked for didn’t seem to grasp this concept. They were very top-heavy, and had expectations that changed daily and never made sense at the floor level.

Absolutely treat your employees right. Give them a great place to work and they will exceed your expectations. It’s not about money. It’s about appreciation and respect.

Spot on! Building an effective team within any organisation relates to an effective brand, delivering on expectations and making the experience beg for a repeat. Is that not what we all want? We must not undervalue a positive team spirit and that does not happen. It is the team members and their leader(s) who accomplish that

My company, Inward Strategic Consulting has been promoting Internal Branding for 11 years. We have learned that unless employees are knowledgable, motivated and inspired, they will not change their behavior to support strategic initiatives.

I thought your article was 100% to the point! There are too many companies who are so concerned with either internet marketing or one specific aspect of traditional marketing, they often forget any good Marketing Strategy or Brand Marketing has to begin with your employees.

I work for a branding agency and building our client’s brand from the inside out is one of the first projects we tackle when acquiring a new client. During the strategy building phase we meet with as many employees as possible to get their feel for the brand, we then do our back-end research to see how this reflects the perceived feel of the brand. We take our strategy from there to make the two compatible. Check out our brand strategy page if you want to see a real life example.

Dear Laura, your are absolutely right. We are also trying to set our internal employee strategy. This is a new concept in Banglaseh.Few companies in Bangladesh have started internal branding for reaching a new height of brand.
