There are times that I nail it and other times that I know I could have done better. I face the same struggles that you do, which is why I was so excited to read Guy's article Writing Hard Headlines and Intros.

I agree it can be mind-blodding when trying make the perfect headliner topic stand out!
And I concurr, when I read a headliner with more than one comma or over five words. I tend to lose interest before reading the article.

Off course headline plays important role no matter where you gona place it but one thing is very important that remaining para or body of message should be truly related to Headline. i.e. I saw some AdWords related to free online books but after clicking on I was landed on Viagra pills website. It is awkward.
