Facebook Makes Changes to the Page Layout

Facebook isn't for kids anymore, businesses are learning how to use Facebook to find their target market and reach out to them with the use of Facebook Pages. Today, an announcement was made and a new Page layout was rolled out.

Don't worry, no need to be panic stricken - you have until March 2011 before you are forced to update.

What's changing?

  • Profile image will have a maximum size of 180 x 540 px.
  • Photos will have prime placement. (Very similar to the new profile pages.)
  • New Wall Filters - including
    -Posts by Page
    -Everyone
    -Most Recent
    -Hidden Posts
  • You can set your account up to receive email notifications on Page (Major bonus in my opinion.)
  • No More Tabs - Tabs are now links, giving up their real estate for photos.
  • Switch from your personal profile to your Page name to make comments and post.
  • Ability to Feature other Pages or Admins of your Page.
  • Ability to post on your page as "You" or your "Page Name."
  • Mutual connections are now shown when people visit your page - i.e. if someone visits your page they will be shown what mutual friends "like" your page. They will also be shown other Pages that your Page "likes" and they like.

Moving from FBML to iFrames - a post on the Facebook Developers page states that Facebook will be moving from FBML, to iFrames as of March 11.

"With our recent launch of Requests and the support for iframe on Pages Tabs, we are now ready to move forward with our previously announced plans to deprecate FBML and FBJS as a primary technology for building apps on Facebook. On March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to create new FBML apps and Pages will no longer be able to add the Static FBML app. While all existing apps on Pages using FBML or the Static FBML app will continue to work, we strongly recommend that these apps transition to iframes as soon as possible."

Your Opinion: What do you think - love or hate the new features?

Oh, and while you are at it don't forget to find Marketing at About on Facebook.

I think it’s great. We have developed a CMS that automatically take form as a full Flash site that embeds to Facebook to stream live content (database driven) from your site to your Facebook Fan Page. We worked extremely hard to get this to work as iFrames were not supported…now that they are, this is great news!

Sometimes the constant changes to Facebook annoy me, then I get used to them and can’t even remember what the site was like before that specific change!

I mange Business pages for a few clients and just recently finished building an app so that it would work with their FBML system. Now, the client is going to have to pay me to re-do it.

That is not a way to bring the business community into Facebook. They are really mishandling their growth now…

I have been trying to figure out how to start a business page that is not attached to a personal profile… anybody know how to do this? My CEO wants our company and our software products to have stand-alone pages, not pages connected to her profile. DOes FB allwo for this or do you ALWAYS have to have a page “owned” by an acutal memeber of the FB community.
