I'm not going to sugar coat things in today's economy it's tough to find that perfect position, especially since there are so many professionals out of work that have a substantial amount of experience. You are not only going head to head with other interns and recent graduates, but you are also going up against those in the job market who have experience and are willing to take a cut in pay just to get back into the job market. Landing a marketing position can be tough, but not impossible. It's important that you be prepared when looking for an internship or entry job. Here are a few tips that I think will help:
- Know which areas of marketing interest you most.
Marketing careers consists of positions in:
- Product Management
- Traditional Marketing (Print, Television, Radio)
- Interactive / New and Social Media Marketing
- Public Relations
And that's just naming a few areas of marketing that are available. Which areas excite you the most? There are some positions in marketing that may fit you better than others. Take sometime doing some homework to see which area you'd fit best in, you'll be glad you did.
- Be clear about what you want.
Have an understanding about what you want to gain from an internship, better yet write it down. What's most important to you:
- Work experience
- Learning new skills and gaining hands-on experience
- Increasing your networking connections
- Creating an entry point to the potential of a full-time position
- Determine which type of organization you are most interested in working for.
Do you find yourself more excited about the small to medium sized businesses vs. large corporations? How about marketing not-for-profit organizations? Is that something that interests you?
By making this determination it will help you in creating of companies you can reach out to and give you a roadmap to follow to find that position you are looking for. Think about the size of a business, the culture and the location. Paint a picture of what the company looks like that you'd like to go to work for, and then start creating your "prospect" list.
- Create a plan on how you will market yourself.
That's right, I said "market" yourself. You are going into marketing, you are asking for an internship or an entry level position and the competition is fierce. You are going to have to stand out, so what will you do to show that you have what it takes to gain the attention of those that matter? This piece is crucial.
A resume just isn't enough anymore. Working in the corporate world, I can tell you that I've seen my fair share of boring resumes sent to me for internships and entry level jobs from college students. Step it up! Be creative and be unique. Dare to stand out. This will get you noticed and improve your chances of landing a job when there are more than just a few looking.
- Use your connections.
Once you have the marketing area that your interested in, the objectives that you hope to achieve, the picture of the organization you are interested in you are ready to turn on the "wow" power and start contacting and reaching out to businesses. Use your network to connect with those who can introduce you to the hiring powers of the companies you are interested in. Use your social networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to learn about new opportunities. Devote time to your search daily. The search may take patience, but don't lose heart and most of all keep your energy positive this will help in landing that desired position.
