Tell Me About You and Your Background::
I've been working in the nonprofit sector over 30 years. The last 15 in nonprofit technology training. I was lucky to have a front row seat when nonprofits started to look to the Internet for advocacy and communications strategies in the early 1990s when I started as a capacity builder and trainer.
How Did You Get Started as a Marketing Consultant?:
I started as a consultant in the mid-1980's after a stint as general manager for a small nonprofit arts organization and working in the development offices of large arts institutions. I discovered that I was a project junkie - and that consulting work really suited me. I started doing technology training and capacity building in 1992.
How Long Have You Been a Consultant?:
Since 1985.
What Qualities Do You Feel Make You Stand Out as a Marketing Consultant?:
I think my company, Zoetica, makes us stand out. Myself and the other two partners, Geoff Livingston and Kami Huyse - have a lot of experience in different areas - so our combined expertise really makes us stands out.
What's a Typical Day for You?:
I start off my day blogging and sharing insights. I like having this quiet start to do my day because it is like meditating. Then, I often have client meetings or work to do or else I'm leading training. In between, I might check into Facebook or Twitter or other social channels. I like to end my day by thinking about what worked well and what didn't ... I think self-reflection is really important because it helps you improve what you do.
What is Your Consulting Specialty?:
I am the CEO of Zoetica, a company that serves nonprofits and socially conscious companies with top-tier, word-of-mouth communication services. Zoetica provides communication consulting, training, and strategy to help mindful organizations affect social change. We do this by building relationships with the community using well-honed social media communication and networking skills.
My area is training.
What Challenges Do You Face and What Advice Do You Have For Others?:
Challenge:The biggest challenge is making sure that the projects you take on are a precise match for your skills and company. I believe strongly that you have to love what you do for work and then passion and paid work come together - it's the best possible situation.
Advice for those wanting to be a marketing consultant
Follow your passion and interests. You also have to be very disciplined and self-directed. If you don't have that skill, then don't be a consultant.
