If you've ever walked through the halls of an advertising and marketing agency you've seen that they are often filled with fun, unique, and sometimes even quirky fixtures. The truth is creativity is often sparked by fun and agencies know this. If you don't work in an agency, but you could use a little jumpstart in your innovative thinking perhaps you can find a few ways to inject fun into your workplace in this article by Fast Company.

Have a technique to share? Let us hear it. Can we ever really have too much fun at work?

I recall that when I used to live in Seattle, and worked at Portent Interactive there, a creative interactive agency. We had something called the Portent University. The idea was that once a month we’d go and do something creative, related to what we did, design websites. We started out going to art museums, but we all decided that was did not have enough relevancy to the company. So we started ordering in a brown bag lunch, and talking about the latest ideas in web design and online marketing. Anyone could present, and we were all free to join in. That may not sound as much fun as going to a museum, but we all really enjoyed the chance to talk with our colleagues about professional topics for a few hours.

John thank you for sharing. It’s amazing how much creativity we can have on staff that we never tap into. This lunch sounds like a great breeding ground for creative sparks!

For especially stressful days, we have a ‘mktg dance hour’. Someone will turn on some music (no matter which genre), and we’ll just start moving. It immediately releases stress [and our bad-ittudes] and starts up our endorphins [and our brain] which have totally stopped…

Dear Laura,

I am running a small business in Australia. As a very young entrepreneur I always try to create a fun and enjoyful atmosphere in the office.

I totally agree that fun induces creativity. Marketing is about creatively think outside the box. This thinking pattern could not be obtained by doing any particularly boring activity.

Great article!

Cheers,
