Facebook Vanity URLs - Claim Your Personal Brand Tonight!

The countdown is on. Ready...Set...Go! That's right in less than one hour you will have the ability to register your vanity url on Facebook. You can do this for both your personal account and fan pages, however your fan page must have over 1000 fans or you are out of luck until the end of the month. If you have a personal Facebook account be sure and protect your personal brand (your name) by registering.

For example right now my Facebook url looks like this:

Facebook.com/people/Laura-Lake/705945777

Once I register my vanity url it will look like this:

Facebook.com/LauraLake

As you can see the vanity urls will simplify how people find you and it will also make it easier to share with others.

How do you register your vanity url at Facebook? At 12:00 a.m EST Saturday morning you will want to visit the Facebook username page to register your name. Act quickly, because if someone gets your name before you do - well it's too bad. Once you've chosen your vanity URL you can not change it, so be wise with what you decide.

Your username can have letters, numbers, and periods but no special characters. Are you ready? Don't let someone else register your name, it can create a personal branding nightmare later. Register your Facebook vanity url!

What if your fan page has less than 1,000 fans? Does that mean you can’t have this vanity url?

(5) Laura Lake :

Mindy, that is correct at least not at this time.

My clients don’t have the time or the willingness to keep up with Twitter or Facebook. They believe it’s a waste of time and truth be told, they don’t want to display their every move in business. Sorry, Facebook and Twitter is not the route to go albiet it is heavily marketed. Just not worth it.

Debi, I wonder if Dell feels the same way – considering using social media they sold $6.5 million in products in 2009. Hmmm :) We all have to make the decision on whether it’s worth it for our businesses and it’s not right for “every” business, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to make a blanketed assumption that it’s not worth it.

Thank you for this! I found your answer via Google search after a fruitless search on Facebook. This simple bit of info was nearly impossible to find. But I was just able to claim my facebook.com/stylemaniac :)

Sandra, you are creating a Facebook Fanpage or a Facebook Group for your company. Creating a regular profile on Facebook for your business is against Facebook TOS – see below:

Please be aware that managing multiple accounts is a serious violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If we determine that an individual has more than one account, we reserve the right to terminate all of their accounts. Maintaining multiple accounts, regardless of the purpose, is a violation of Facebook’s Terms of Use. If you already have a personal account, then we cannot allow you to create business accounts for any reason.

Truth is Facebook Fan pages and Groups create more of a community and will serve your business better in the long run.
