This week I found myself working on a new promotional campaign. I was reminded of all the questions that I receive regarding promotions and marketing especially during these economic times.
It's true we often feel as if our jobs are on the line if a campaign does not prove to be successful. We are often depended on for the increase in sales and consumer attention. That's a lot of pressure to carry and I'd like to see if I can help in easing that pressure.
We know that marketing is a lot of trial and error, but the truth is there are things you can do to increase the success of your promotional campaign. I've outlined them for you in seven easy steps. I have found that when I follow these steps I have confidence in knowing that I have done my due diligence in creating a campaign that will prove to be successful. Give these seven steps in creating a successful promotional campaign a try and I think you will find the same to be true for you.

Some good advice here. All I would add is to think carefully about your marketing spend.
Don’t imagine you need to spend a lot as there are many ways to market that cost just pence or are totally free.
For example advertising is expensive (and often delivers poor results) so think about media releases (you could get great press coverage or on radio/TV), word of mouth, email, etc …..as these cost virtually nothing.
Then consider things like Pay Per Click as, when done well, it costs very little.
Only after you have exhausted the free marketing streams, and there are hundreds of them, should you look to start spending money!
Great tips for promotional campaigns. I agree with Stefan and you have to make sure there is a balance for your own business as well as your clients over what the overall costs will be and the expected return. Providing promotional assistance for businesses also can give great satisfaction when things go as planned or better and this is important to ensure you keep doing your job well. Great tips thanks.

The seven steps are very informative. I think one of the great things when creating a marketing or promotion campaign for someone or helping them is the satisfaction when they see the results.

With such a bombardment of marketing material available now to the general public, it’s definitely not a one shoe fits all type of policy. For some businesses and companies simple low cost effective marketing and branding solutions may be suitable. For others, who are larger companies, main stream media marketing could be flavour of the month. Consider ROI on your next marketing campaign and make sure this can be tested and measured.
Also consider that Marketing in a tough economy is arguably the best time to do so. I recently wrote that marketing in a bad economy can offer you the chance to stand out more. This does not however decrease the pressure the marketer gets put on her!
Great points on laying out a base plan. I always like to ask clients if their goal in branding or direct marketing. When embarking on a plan this is an important question. If your main goal is to drive conversions then measurement of results is critical. If you goal is simply to get your business name out there and increase brand recognition then different marketing tactics will apply.
Always film/photograph your promotional campaigns, it can be very useful later for online promos.
